I've been Boing Boing'd!

My panorama's of the Reed College flags have been mentioned on Boing Boing - one of the most visited blogs in the 'verse. 360 Panorama: Reed College War Memorial and Protest Fame at last! Pity I'm at home sick so I can't really enjoy my 15 minutes of fame. :-(

Update 1: As mentioned on Boing Boing: The numbers are derived from the highly controversial Lancet study that used unverified sampling methodology. Iraq Body Count, which documents verifiable deaths, currently places the number of civilians killed at over an order of magnitude less—at maximum, 64,444. This is why I mentioned that I wasn't sure if the numbers were correct. See here. Also, I feel I should point out that the red flags were not distributed evenly amongst the white; there was a large square of them.

Update 2: There is some debate at BB as to if these numbers are good or not, it seems that the controversy could be more political than scientific . Their methodology may not have been so suspect...see This American Life.

Photogenic war protest and memorial

360 Panorama: Reed College War Memorial and Protest Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

I stumbled across this protest/memorial at Reed College today, as I was looking for something to photograph with my new Canon XTI Digital SLR. This is a 360 degree panorama of the front of the college after someone had placed 123,000 little flags on the lawn. (You can also see it displayed in a viewer, or much bigger). Each red flag represents a US solder who has died in the war; each white represents 6 Iraqis who has died. (I can't vouch for the accuracy of the numbers). The sight was impressive and quite moving.

Panoramas from DC

Here are some panorama's and stitched stuff from DC. All were stitched with Autostitch. Tall Stitched image with Dancers inside National Museum of the American Indian This is inside the National Museum of the American Indian, which is an amazing new building with a huge atrium. There are dancers at the very bottom.

US Capitol Outside the Capitol.

Apotheosis of Washington by Constantino Brumidi Inside the Capitol dome - Washington Apotheosis. Slightly disturbing to turn Washington into a God! This was taken with a zoom and then stitched then warped.

The Hubble Space Telescope in the National Air and Space Museum I love the Hubble Space Telescope. This picture doesn't give it a sense of size, which is a shame.

What is it with contractors?

Gaden Room - Inside
Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

This is our 90%-finished new sun-room. The wide-angle makes it seem bigger than it really is...

We booked the contractors in February. They said they would start within 12-16 weeks, and it would take about 2 weeks, with a few items being done after the initial work.

So far it has taken all of July and they still haven't quite finished. The quality of the work is good, but they don't turn up when they say they are going to; they don't come for weeks at a time; (for example) they left a complete mess then didn't turn up for two weeks. Still no electricity (a week late), the siding has needed painting for three weeks.

The whole fiasco has meant that we've not been able to go away on vacation at all (we've been planning a summer vacation since January), and now the prof goes back to teaching on August 19th...

Sigh. The room is nice, but I really, really need a vacation!

See this before and after Flickr set of the work...

Dog Mountain makes me ache!

Stitched View of Washington and Oregon from Dog Mountain, Washington
Originally uploaded by Major Clangr.

Taken from Dog Mountain, Washington, near the Columbia River Gorge which separates Washington and Oregon, so this pictuture contains mountains in both states. Dog mountain is in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

This is a very steep climb - 2,800 feet at the top, my guide book rated it as "difficult", it took about 1 hour 45 minutes to get to the top, and much less to get back down.

That was yesterday. Today I can hardly walk - back, calves, everything aches... but it was worth it - see Flickr Set.

Summer Cycling has begun - English Muffin Rock Formation

Biscuit Rocks, Estacada, Oregon
Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

Spring has sprung! Summer has come! Cycling has returned. We picked a bike ride from a book - 12 miles in Estacada - along the Clackamas River. I'm sure it took longer to drive there than the actual ride, but it was great to be outdoors and cycling again.

Here is another picture from the ride - a huge fish ladder at the North Fork Dam.

Clackamas River Fish Run

Next week I'm going to start cyclng to work to. Yeah!

Cathedral to Science: The Natural History Museum Waterhouse Building
Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

It took all day, but I've stitched and processed 48 of the pictures I took in the UK... and put them on Flickr.

I had a great trip, great fun, it was very nice to see everyone again. I have a horrible headache and a cough now, I hope I'm not going down with something nasty!

Rainy Portland: Remembering Hawai'i

Hawai'i Crater Panorama
Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

I found even more picture of our vacation in Hawaii - some panorama's and 3D shots which I hadn't stitched yet. A very nice way to spend a rainy "semi-Holiday", playing with stitching software and thinking about what a great vacation it was.

Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup, 2005

Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup, 2005
Originally uploaded by Major Clanger.

We took part in the Great Oregon Fall Beach Cleanup, as you can see there were lots of people on the beach here at Nahalem State Park. Ken is on the left, on the right is a small, but growing, garbage pile.

There is a similar event in spring - here is a picture from March: Sunset Beach, Oregon, during Spring Beach Cleanup
